The Motors Efficiency Global Alliance, or MEGA, brings key stakeholders together to help transform the market for electric motors in favor of energy-efficient products. According to the International Energy Agency, more than 40% of the actions to meet the Paris Climate Agreement goals need to come from energy efficiency. Electric motors consume over half of the world’s electricity and emit a commensurate amount of CO2 emissions.
Without making strides in motor efficiency across global markets, there is little hope of achieving the Paris Agreement. MEGA brings together the world’s leading experts on all things related to making electric motors as efficient as possible.
INITIATIVE GOAL:
To help reduce CO2 emissions by reducing electricity losses of electric motors in key end-use sectors.
Transforming Motor Markets
MEGA will work in countries to develop and implement programs that will transform the markets for their industrial motors.
Policy Development and MEPS
MEGA will help with policy development on minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) – either as a new baseline or for increased ambition for countries with MEPS that lag behind best global practices. Since industrial motors have such long service lives – 20, 30 years or more – it can take decades for the installed base to be renovated to the MEPS level.
Crucially, MEGA will help countries to develop large-scale programs on the early replacement of inefficient motors. We will be a driving force that provides capacity-building, technical assistance and the creation of jobs
